Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Mongan Method of HypnoBirthing?

HypnoBirthing is a birthing technique that combines relaxation, breathing exercises, and visualization to help expectant parents have a calm, natural birth. It helps parents reduce fear, tension, and discomfort during labor by using self-hypnosis and other techniques. HypnoBirthing encourages a positive mindset and helps parents feel more in control during the birthing process. It also can help reduce anxiety and stress during pregnancy and in the postpartum period.

The Mongan Method is the original natural birth education method that uses hypnosis. Class material covers deep relaxation, special breathing, visualization, affirmations, toning and exercises, massage, and, of course, physiology of labor and birth and basics of breastfeeding.

What are the benefits of HypnoBirthing?

Moms and couples I have the pleasure of working with leave class feeling less fearful and more confident and excited as they approach birth. They develop trust in their bodies and learn how to relax deeply, connect with their body, their partner, and their baby, and tune out distractions. They feel more prepared to meet birth as it unfolds and to effectively advocate for their choices. And partners learn how to be present and supportive throughout labor.

What is the biggest misconception about HypnoBirthing?

One of the biggest misconceptions I come across is people thinking they will be “hypnotized” during birth and worry that they would feel disconnected, zoned out, or in some kind of eerie or unusual state. It’s quite the opposite!

In HypnoBirthing, we use hypnosis, including self-hypnosis and partner-led hypnosis, as a way to practice new skills and reshape unhelpful associations or beliefs we may have picked up along the way. It helps strengthen self-agency, promotes deep relaxation, and creates a calm and focused mindset. Rather than feeling disconnected, parents feel more present, more aware, and more in tune with their body and their baby.

So, no eerie states. Just useful tools that support comfort, confidence, and connection.

How does the birth partner fit into the process?

Birth partners and other support people play a crucial role. The program teaches them a specific set of skills and gives them plenty of time to practice how to support moms most effectively. Partners learn how to create a calm environment, offer verbal and physical comfort, guide breathing and relaxation techniques (if needed), and serve as a steady, reassuring presence throughout labor.

They also learn how to advocate for the family’s preferences, communicate with the care team, and help protect the birthing space so moms can stay focused and relaxed. Many partners tell me that these tools make them feel more confident and connected, both during labor and in the lead-up to birth.

Is HypnoBirthing only for medication-free births?

While HypnoBirthing is especially helpful for parents seeking a natural, medication-free birth, the techniques taught in HypnoBirthing classes help reduce anxiety and make birth more comfortable in all birth settings. It is for anyone who wants to take an active role in shaping their birth experience and is willing to spend some time preparing for a more positive birth!

I have worked with families planning unmedicated births, moms who needed a medically necessary induction, and those who required a surgical birth. In each case, the tools make a meaningful difference in preparation for birth, during birth, and in postpartum period.

How do I choose a HypnoBirthing facilitator?

When selecting a HypnoBirthing facilitator, look for someone who is certified. The Mongan Method educators are certified by the HypnoBirthing Institute. Ask to chat with the educator. A good facilitator should create a comfortable and supportive environment. You may also want to ask about class size, availability, and ongoing support throughout your pregnancy.
